Based on historical patterns, Canada and Alberta are not attracting their fair share of the US $171 billion of new investments in the North American chemistry sector. We might expect 1/10 as historical share, given the comparative sizes of our economies, but have been receiving only about 1/5 of the 1/10. The good news is that Canada, and Alberta are at least making it to the short lists for those companies considering North American investments. Canada has equivalent market and feedstock access, and has done many things right in improving depreciation treatments and lowering corporate tax rates. Despite this, the winning conditions are not present and in the case of investments, there is no silver medal for the runner up. It is a winner takes all game. This session will discuss what it will take to establish the winning conditions in Canada.
